This study looked at the effects of the standardized saw palmetto extract on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) resulting from an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate can lead to symptoms such as difficulty urinating, weak urine stream, frequent and urgent urination, incomplete bladder emptying, and nighttime waking.
In the study, 45 healthy men with a mean age of 55 who were experiencing LUTS secondary to BPH supplemented with 320 mg USPlus® for 12 weeks. Mean voided volume, voiding time and maximum flow rate were measured at baseline and weeks six and 12, and the participants also were assessed utilizing the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Qualify of Life (QoL) score.
The study authors found that participants experienced significant improvements in uroflowmetry parameters with increased urinary flow rates.
- 65% of men saw an improved IPSS (score of severity of urinary symptoms)
- 100% of men saw an improvement in QoL (Quality of Life) scores at 12 weeks. One-third of men saw improvements in as little as six weeks.
There were also significant changes in both IPSS sub scores of voiding (symptoms of weak stream and straining) and storage (symptoms of urgency and frequency) at week 12.
- 50% of men experienced a stronger stream and less straining to urinate in as little as six weeks
- 59% of men were better able to hold their urine and had less urge to urinate frequently
These findings have led the authors to conclude that, a standardized USP-verified saw palmetto extract shows some promise in reducing LUTS and improving uroflowmetry parameters especially in (men) with baseline moderate symptoms.
Lead investigator Dr. Bilal Chughtai, Department of Urology, Northwell Health, noted that “This study shows really promising clinical evidence for the use of standardized USP-verified saw palmetto for men suffering with BPH.”
